Chennai, 6th November 2024—Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) proudly announced the official launch of its new direct flight route between Bandar Seri Begawan and Chennai, India. RB’s Airbus A320neo landed at Chennai International Airport on the 5th of November 2024 at approximately 22:50LT and was greeted by a water cannon salute. This new connection signifies a significant expansion in RB’s global network. It marks a historic step in strengthening the cultural, economic, and people-to-people ties between Brunei Darussalam and India.
The airline celebrated the launch in Chennai through a series of events in collaboration with the Brunei High Commission in India, the Brunei Economic and Development Board (BEDB), and Brunei Tourism (BT) at the ITC Grand Chola in Chennai, aimed at strengthening partnerships, promoting Brunei as a unique destination, and showcasing investment opportunities for Indian businesses.
RB’s CEO, Chief Commercial Officer, STIC Travel Group (RB’s agent in India) and Brunei Tourism representatives held a press conference, where they introduced Brunei and the new route and spoke on the broader significance of this connection for both nations.
In collaboration with BEDB, an investment seminar was organised for Indian business leaders. The event brought together a diverse group of individuals, including stroke survivors, healthcare professionals, and corporate teams, all united by a common goal: to raise awareness about stroke and inspire hope for recovery.
The highlight of the event was the thrilling ‘Strike Against Stroke’ cricket match, which saw corporate teams and healthcare professionals face off in a friendly yet competitive match. The “Strike Against Stroke” match was won by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), while Equitas Small Finance Bank and Brakes India came in first runner-up and second runner-up, respectively. The winner of the match was Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).This unique initiative aimed to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, while also highlighting the importance of being active and physically fit to prevent stroke.
“It’s an honor to be a part of this initiative,” said Dinesh Karthik.“Stroke can have devastating consequences, but stroke can be avoided by maintaining a healthy level of physical activity and fitness. Chennai, October 28, 2024: Rela Hospital has established an advanced 24/7 cath lab for acute stroke interventions to support a range of neurovascular and interventional radiology procedures. Dr. C. Sylendra Babu, IPS (Retd.), former Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, inaugurated the facility in the presence of Prof. Mohamed Rela, Chairman and Managing Director of Rela Hospital.
The lab has the latest technology for diagnosis and treatment, and is supported by neurointerventional neurologists to ensure rapid access to critical treatments. Some of the critical procedures that will be carried out in the new cath lab include: mechanical thrombectomy to remove clots and restore brain blood flow; aneurysm coiling (with flow diverters) for aneurysm management and rupture prevention, and embolisation of arteriovenous malformations to treat abnormal blood vessels. Additionally, the lab will facilitate embolisation of highly vascular tumors, reducing blood supply to specific tumors, and stenting for severe vessel stenosis, addressing narrowed carotid and intracranial vessels to help prevent stroke recurrence.
The inauguration of the lab coincides with World Stroke Day, which falls on October 29, every year. This year’s theme, “Access to Stroke Treatment – Save #PreciousTime,” emphasises the importance of rapid response and access to treatment facilities to minimise stroke damage.
In his address, Dr. C. Sylendra Babu, IPS (Retd.), former Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, Tamil Nadu, said, “I am happy that Rela Hospital is introducing cutting-edge technology for stroke interventions that can enable doctors to provide advanced treatments for acute stroke and stroke-related vascular conditions, giving patients the best chance at recovery. However, prevention is better than cure. Statistics reveal that 80% of strokes can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and managing risk factors such as blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity. People should engage in physical activities — whether it’s walking, running, cycling, or participating in a sports event. At least 30 minutes of exercise a day is important. Physical activity can reduce the risk of stroke, improve physical fitness and enhance mental health.”
In his address, Prof. Mohamed Rela, said, “In India, one in four individuals over the age of 60 is at risk of experiencing a stroke. While the elderly are most at risk due to conditions like atherosclerosis (the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls), younger individuals are also vulnerable, often due to conditions that increase blood clotting. We are committed to bringing advanced technologies to acute stroke interventions. Globally, over 15 million people suffer from stroke every year – out of which 5 million die and another 5 million are left permanently disabled. As far as interventions are concerned, the focus is on reducing the time between diagnosis and treatment, which can save lives and prevent long-term damage.”
He added that the new cath lab is a well-equipped and integrated facility that can ensure quick, effective, and safe care treatment. It has the latest imaging technology for high-clarity images, allowing for precise, effective interventions. The lab also ensures a safer treatment environment by significantly bringing down the radiation exposure for both patients and healthcare providers. We have integrated a parallel working station to enable simultaneous diagnostics and treatment planning.”
In his comments, Dr. Shankar Balakrishnan, Clinical Lead, Department of Neurology, Neuro Sciences, Rela Centre For Mobility & Movement, said that medical advances have dramatically improved stroke outcomes, especially when treatment is initiated within the 4.5 to 6-hour window after symptom onset, although certain cases may benefit up to 24 hours post-onset. “With multimodal imaging, we can quickly identify salvageable brain tissue, allowing for precise intervention. Cutting-edge catheters and aspiration devices allow for effective clot removal with minimal side effects, significantly reducing the risk of complications such as permanent paralysis or decreased cognitive function. CHENNAI / September 14, 2024: The 15th Convocation of The Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), held at Chennai, saw nearly 1,600 students from over 6 Schools and 150 programs receive UG, PG degrees and Ph.Ds in multiple streams including engineering, SLAAS, architecture, law, and management. Sir Andre Konstantin Geim, the Nobel Prize winner renowned for his groundbreaking research in condensed matter physics, including the co-discovery of graphene, graced the event as the Chief Guest. Padma Bhushan Mr. Nambi Narayanan, Indian Aerospace Scientist, and Dr. P Veeramuthuvel, Project Director of Chandrayaan 3, ISRO, were Special Guests. The Convocation was presided over by HITS Chancellor, Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese.
An exclusive panel discussion was also held on the theme of Graphene Applications in Aerospace and Defence. Featuring Sir Andre Konstantin Geim, the event delved into the remarkable properties and vast applications of graphene, a material that is revolutionizing various industries from electronics to materials science.
Speaking at the Convocation, Sir Geim shared anecdotes from his own research journey, highlighting the challenges and rewards of pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. He encouraged the graduates to embrace a spirit of adventure, question the status quo, follow their passions with full determination and embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Sir Andre Konstantin Geim said: “The collective future of humanity depends on our pursuit of new knowledge. As you embark on your career journey, be aware of the temptation to simply follow orders and stay within the confines of your job description. Too many brilliant minds have wasted their life this way, trapped in the comfort of routine. In those moments when we step outside our comfort zone and explore new ideas, we often find ourselves doing the most important things in our lives and careers.”
He added: “My most successful work in life happened when I took a step away from the routine and did some simple projects away from what I was mandated to do. Simply pouring water inside an electromagnet led me to the very first demonstration of magnetic levitation. Trying to replicate in a lab how geckos climb walls led me to a new type of dry adhesive that has become a hot research subject today. And I am not even a biologist! The experiment that got me the Nobel Prize started with a simple question: What if we keep dividing graphite into smaller and smaller parts till it could not be divided further? This simple curiosity led to the discovery of graphene, the thinnest material in the universe. So, it is through unexpected detours and endeavors and those moments where you dare to think differently that we make our most significant breakthroughs that could be the turning point of our careers.”
The University honored the outstanding achievements of Mr. Nambi Narayanan and Dr. P Veeramuthuvel by awarding them Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). Mr. Nambi is a pioneer in liquid propulsion systems and launch vehicles. His work contributed significantly towards the success of rockets like Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan. Dr. P Veeramuthuvel, a project director at ISRO, led the Chandrayaan 3 mission to a successful soft landing on the moon.
Dr. P Veeramuthuvel recounted the various challenges faced in the quest to successfully put a lander on the moon and how these were overcome. He said: “With Chandrayaan-3, we achieved a perfect landing on the moon last year. There were many pains and failures before achieving this mission. Failure is bound to happen; we need to learn from our mistakes, continuously work on them, and come up with corrective actions. One of the important qualities everyone must develop is resilience. The second is team effort. Individually, you may be very successful, but organizations demand product outcomes that require multidisciplinary efforts. The third important aspect is testing. To gain confidence, we need thorough testing of our innovations to ensure their success. If you want to achieve significant accomplishments, you need to continuously strive for excellence. Whatever work you undertake, whether small or large, give your 100% to it.”
Mr. Nambi Narayanan narrated the journey and struggles of a small team of ISRO scientists developing a liquid-fueled rocket engine that powers many of India’s space launch missions today. “The lesson from the story of development of India’s Vikas engine is that, if you have passion and give your heart and soul to something, you will definitely succeed,” he said.
The Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, Founder Chairman Award for Best Research was conferred on Mr. Shiju Rawther, Ph.D. Scholar CSE. The Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Verghese Founder Chancellor Award for best academic proficiency was presented to Mr. Devashish Sharma, B.Tech. Mechatronics.
