Persistent rains caused widespread flooding and inundation in Chennai causing water logging in the low-lying areas along the banks. At least 17 people were killed, and more than 41,000 people were evacuated and temporarily relocated, including 32,158 in Tamil Nadu and 9,500 in Andhra Pradesh. People have been evacuated to 4967 Govt shelters. Sanitation workers have been deployed to the worst affected districts and there has been massive damage to household / hygiene items and education materials.
We recognize the urgent need to focus our efforts in these areas and our mission at Bal Raksha Bharat is to ensure the well-being and safety of children and their families, as this disaster has posed an immediate threat to the lives of many vulnerable in the affected regions. The selected regions are coastal districts where water intrusion has damaged infrastructure housing and household and education materials even in the hinterlands.
