Rela Hospital’s Cyclothon Creates Awareness on Women Safety

• The hospital is the lead sponsor of Freedom 125 and Viduthalai 40, the 125 km and 40 km cyclothon events respectively, organised in association with Chennai Cyclists

Chennai, August 18, 2024: Rela Hospital and Chennai Cyclists joined hands to organise cyclothon events aimed at raising awareness on women safety. The 125-km “Freedom 125” and the 40-km “Viduthalai 40” cyclathons drew 500 student, men and women cyclists from across the city.

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, the CEO of Rela Hospital, Guest of Honor Dr. M. R. Soundararajan, international cyclist, Special Guests – Ms Padmini Janaki, CEO and Cofounder, “Mind and Mom” and Dr. Deepa Shree, HOD – Interventional Radiology, Rela Hospital flagged off the cyclothons at 5:30 am from the hospital. The events concluded at the same spot around lunchtime. Participants, in the age group of 16 to 70 years, equipped with safety gear and jerseys bearing the slogan “Prioritising Women’s Safety Everyday”, cycled along the route covering GST Road, Thiruporur, Chengalpet, Palur, Orgadum, Padappai, and Mudichur. They were awarded medals upon completing the distance.

The ‘Sweeping Team,’ a group of volunteer cyclists, accompanied the riders, offering motivation and providing water to keep participants hydrated throughout the event. Over 60 volunteers were stationed at key points to ensure cyclists stayed on the designated route. Ambulance services were on standby, with a team of first responders from Alert NGO ready to provide first aid if needed.

In his comments, Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, said, “We are happy to organise this cyclothon in association with the Chennai Cyclists. We chose women’s safety as our theme against the backdrop of the deeply unfortunate and condemnable acts of violence against women in some parts of our country. These incidents underscore the urgent need to ensure that women feel safe and supported – at home, in the workplace, and throughout society. A secure and humane environment is essential to increase their participation in the labor force, which is currently below 40%. By prioritizing safety, we pave the way for women to contribute more fully to our nation’s growth and prosperity.”

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Deepa Shree said “While protests and public outcry are important, they often focus on symptoms rather than the underlying causes. To truly create a safer and more independent India, we need to dig deeper into why this mindset exists in the first place. An independent India is not just about freedom from colonial rule; it’s about creating a society where every individual – especially women – can live without fear, with dignity and respect.”

Ms Padmini Janaki, CEO and Cofounder, “Mind and Mom”, a technology platform that focuses on women healthcare added, “Real empowerment of women comes from actions, not just words and creating an environment where everyone can thrive irrespective of gender and where women are not just encouraged but also given the tools and opportunities to succeed.”

Mr. Anil Jain, Core Member, Chennai Cyclists, said, “We are thrilled to partner with Rela Hospital in conducting the cycling events. Our club, with 20 chapters across the city, is dedicated to promoting cycling as a means to improve health and well-being. Together with Rela Hospital, we aim to create a culture where cycling becomes a key component of a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Our objectives are to encourage more people to embrace cycling not only for its health benefits but also to contribute to a cleaner, fresher environment. In the past, we had successfully conducted cycling and endurance events with the hospital like the Tenacity 110 and Determination 150. We look forward to continuing and expanding this partnership in the future.”

82 years old woman walks again, after Successful Revision Total Replacement Surgery at Sivam Hospital

Chennai, August 12, 2024: Sivam Hospital successfully performed a revision total hip replacement surgery on an 82-year-old woman, who was admitted to the hospital with complaints of left hip pain and inability to walk for the past six months. After diagnosis, doctors found that her hip implants are loosened and extensive osteolysis in the acetabulam and proxymal femur.

The patient Mrs. Chithra underwent her initial hip replacement surgery 13 years ago after a hip fracture. Doctors gave her an uncemented hip replacement, that creates a permanent bond between the implant and the skeleton without cement.
Physician and cardiologist examined the patient and found her fit to undergo the surgery. Revision total hip replacement surgery was carried out by a group of orthopaedic surgeons under the leadership of Dr. V. Sivakumar, Senior Joint Replacement Surgeon. The surgery was successful and was done within 4 hours. The patient is now undergoing regular physio exercises for one month to back to her normal routine life.

Dr. V. Sivakumar, Senior Joint Replacement Surgeon said, “Since the patient had severe pain, we planned to perform revision total hip replacement surgery immediately. We had to deal with extensive bone loss in the acetabulam and the femur. There was extensive black debris due to metallosis and soft tissue scarring. Uncemented implants were used for the acetabulam and cemented implant was used for the femur. She is recovering well from the surgery.”
Revision total hip replacement aims to remove some or all the parts of the original prosthesis and replace them with new ones. It significantly helps to relieve hip pain, extend the life span of new prosthesis as well as to improve patient’s function and quality of life.

An article published in the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ)

An article published in the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) Open Diabetes Research and Care about an all-India study Early screening for foot problems in people with diabetes is the need of hour: ‘Save the Feet, Keep Walking campaign’ in India.

Chennai, 7 August 2024: Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Managing Director & Chief Physician MV Hospital for Diabetes and Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre Royapuram led a national drive “Save the Feet, keep walking campaign” in 2022 across India with the National Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), the largest organisation of Diabetes Care professionals in the world. The main aim of the campaign was to assess the foot for Loss of Protective Sensation (LOPS) in people with diabetes to detect neuropathy at early stage to prevent Diabetic Foot complications. The HCPs across India joined this 1-month long campaign to raise awareness among people and educate them towards regular foot assessment.

As part of this campaign, a total of 54000 people with diabetes had undergone foot examination. Dr Vijay Viswanathan and his co-authors reported the data for 33259 participants in the article published in the journal BMJ OPen Diab Res Care.

The authors found about one-fourth of the population who underwent examination had high risk feet. The risk was classified as high risk based on the presence of LOPS or Peripheral Artery Disease and one or more of the other risk factors such as history of DFU or lower extremity amputation or end-stage renal disease) as per International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) guidelines 2023.

Dr. Vijay Viswanathan said that nearly 3/4th of the study population who had HR feet were found to have renal and retinal complications. Heel fissures was found to increase 4.6 times the odds of having HR feet. Presence of callus or corn, age > 45 years, smoking habit, poor glycemic control, male gender were other factors associated with the presence of HR feet.

Low- and Middle-income countries including India face high burden of diabetes and hence foot related problems among them. Poor foot care practices mainly barefoot walking and poor management of foot ulcer may lead to amputation. Wound care is an integral part of healthcare system. Wound clinics play a crucial role in modern healthcare addressing a wide range of acute and chronic wounds. The demand for awareness, early screening of foot and wound care services has been steadily increasing, making it vital for healthcare professionals to stay informed about best practices in preventing and management of Diabetic Foot conditions.

An effective translation of appropriate treatment guidelines on the early diagnosis and management of diabetic foot will improve the quality of foot care practices.

World Breastfeeding Week, Seethapathy Hospital launches free breastfeeding consultation helpline for new mothers in Chennai

Chennai, August 2024: To mark World Breastfeeding Week, Seethapathy Hospital has organized various awareness activities. The hospital launched free breastfeeding consultation helpline (7305644465) aims to provide mothers with accurate and reliable medical advice, addressing any questions or concerns they may have. This helpline provides access to certified and experienced lactation consultants and operates 24 X 7.

Additionally, the hospital held an interactive session with experts on breastfeeding to highlight its importance, aiming to educate new and expectant mothers, as well as their families, on balancing work and breastfeeding.

Seethapathy Hospital also introduced the Mother’s Support Club today, which is dedicated to supporting mothers from their child’s birth up to the child’s second year. This club will offer support to new mothers regarding breast feeding, assist in recognizing feeding cues and provide tips on weaning going forward.

Breastfeeding reduces the burden of childhood illness and the risk of certain types of cancers and noncommunicable diseases for mothers. When mothers receive the support, they need to breastfeed their babies, everyone benefits. Improving breastfeeding rates could save over 820,000 children’s lives each year, according to the latest available data.

In her comments, Dr Uma Ram, Senior Obstetrician and Gynecologist and Director Seethapathy Hospital said, “Some studies from India shows 20-25% skin to skin in the first hour after birth. Globally 6/10 babies are not put to the breast within the first hour. With a commitment from the health care facility and motivated staff along with antenatal preparation of the mothers through breastfeeding classes at Seethapathy hospital we have been able to achieve 85% skin to skin, 60% baby to breast within the first hour and 70% exclusive breast feeding at 6 months.”

In her comments, Mrs Rekha Sudarsan, Childbirth Educator and Lactation Consultant, Seethapathy Hospital said, “The first hour after birth is important for the mother and baby. The time soon after the delivery of the baby is when many physiological changes happen in the mother. Careful observation at this period is needed to pick up potential problems. The first hour is also very significant for the baby and called the golden hour. At this time, initiating skin to skin contact and breast feeding is crucial as it imparts many advantages to the baby.”

“Exclusive breast feeding is also important. Some women will have difficulty in feeding or may not be able to feed due to medications they are on. Others can develop mastitis or breast abcess. These women need additional support as they can continue to bond effectively and need not feel guilty because they have good reasons to introduce alternative feeds to the baby” added Mrs Rekha Sudarsan

World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from August 1 to 7, raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and providing support to mothers. The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2024 is “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all.” This year’s focus is on celebrating the diversity of breastfeeding mothers throughout their breastfeeding journeys. The campaign aims to showcase how families, societies, communities, and health workers can support every breastfeeding mother, regardless of their circumstances.
