Chennai, India (25 November 2023) Mrs KS, aged 81 years, has been living with her daughter in Boston, United States, for 15 years. In the past three months, she experienced increased difficulty in walking and cognitive functioning. This also led to her being prone to falls. She had a history of bilateral knee replacement but was otherwise leading a normal life. The doctors she consulted in the US noticed that apart from the aforesaid imbalance, Mrs KS also had reduced hearing in her right ear and poor coordination while using her right hand. On further investigation, they found that she had a large brain tumour arising from her hearing nerve and had recommended an immediate surgery. Mrs KS and her family sought medical advice from different hospitals in the US and India and finally decided to get treated by Dr Krish Sridhar at Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, Chennai, following a series of video consultations with him. Dr Krish Sridhar, Group Mentor and Director, Institute of Brain and Spine, said, “We had to remove a giant vestibular schwannoma, a surgery that took nearly 10 hours. The surgical removal of vestibular schwannoma is always particularly tricky, especially when it is a large tumour (more than 4.5 cm in diameter) as in the case with Mrs KS. We performed the surgery using a high-end operating microscope and constant neuro monitoring, ensuring that the critical nerves responsible for swallowing, speech and those associated with the face are not affected when we remove the tumor.” Following the successful surgery, she was able to walk in two days and got discharged on the 7th day from the hospital. Mrs KS had continued her physiotherapy sessions as advised and returned to the US, hale and fit. “Many people are scared of surgery when they or their family member is above the age of 70. However, with advancements in anaesthesia, superior operating room technology and continuous monitoring, risks have remarkably reduced. Surgery – even for critical brain tumours – can be successfully performed at any age, provided the patient is medically fit,” says Dr Sridhar. The team at Kauvery Institute of Brain and Spine is happy to have successfully removed the brain tumour, allowing Mrs KS to get back to her previous level of health and wishes her good health and an active life ahead. Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, is a leading healthcare institution offering advanced treatments and surgical interventions in neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, women and child wellness, orthopaedics, joint reconstruction, urology, nephrology and other specialities. With a dedicated team of experts and state-of-the-art medical facilities including 50+ critical care beds, 20+ NICU beds, 7+ operation theatres, an advanced Cath lab, cutting-edge neuro diagnostic equipment like 3T MRI and 4K + 3D neuro microscope, transplant facilities and 24/7

Chennai-21.11.2023-Childhood is a time of rapid growth and development, but at times, children may experience delays in their growth for various reasons. Parents often grapple with feelings of uncertainties, wondering why their child isn’t growing as expected and that can sometimes be overwhelming. Stunted growth occurs due to either inadequate nutrient intake, which can lead to growth impairment, chronic illnesses, or environmental factors 1 . Today, across the world, there are approximately 149 million stunted children below the age of five. In fact, a report by the World Health Organization shows that India accounts for nearly one-third of the global childhood stunting burden with 40.6 million children stunted under the age of five. Let’s deep dive into what catch-up growth is, its causes, and how parents can support their child’s catch-up growth journey. What Is Catch-Up Growth? Malnutrition stands as a primary cause for stunted growth in children. Children often experience growth spurt upon the restoration of adequate nutrition known as spontaneous catch-up (CU) growth. This helps kids regain their initial growth trajectory. 2 Children who experience faltering development often need extra calories, protein, and micronutrients. These nutrients serve a dual purpose, it not only replenishes what was lost during periods of inadequate intake but also helps to support further growth. 3 Many children are consuming nutritious foods; however, it’s necessary to address the challenges of efficient nutrition. Minerals, such as calcium, iron, and zinc, are crucial for a child’s growth and development. Additionally, encouraging active engagement in physical activities is a key factor in nurturing children’s overall well-being. How to Promote Growth through Nutritional Intervention While providing proper nutrition is crucial to your child’s healthy growth and development at all stages, nutritional intervention is also essential from an early age. There is a need to understand and address undernutrition, which can result from insufficient dietary intake, suboptimal nutrient absorption, or utilization of inefficient nutrients. Focusing on a child’s life at an earlier stage will mitigate the serious consequences it can have on their growth potential, ensuring they reach their full developmental capacity. Evaluating childhood nutrition involves more than just ensuring your child consumes his/her vegetables; it can be a multifaceted process. The key outcome of good nutrition is crucial not only for achieving optimal height but also for supporting cognitive development and bolstering immune function. Approaching a healthcare physician should be considered when treating kids who are falling behind on growth. Encouraging Healthy and Holistic growth in Children: Children are often more physically active than adults, therefore they tend to be hungrier. Make sure they eat a well-
balanced diet with a variety of healthy foods and nutrients. Here are a few ways how you can ensure your child’s development with these healthy habits:
Measure and monitor to help your child grow: Begin by regularly monitoring your child’s growth, particularly for children aged 2 to 6 years. Dr Bhaskar Raju, DCH, MD, DM, HOD Dept of Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Institute of Child Health adds, “It is advisable to measure them every three months, and parents can opt to use tools such as a growth diary or tracker. Accurate measurement is crucial for comprehending and tracking a child’s growth.” Moreover, it can aid in the early detection of growth deficiencies, enabling parents to take prompt action and address the underlying causes
Eat right: To support holistic growth, provide a balanced diet that includes cereals, pulses, milk, meat, fruits, and vegetables daily. This ensures your child receives the necessary protein, vitamins, and minerals for healthy bone development. For parents of fussy eaters, consider using oral nutrition supplements for a well-rounded diet. Engage your children in shopping, meal planning, and cooking to increase their interest in eating what they’ve helped prepare. Make meals more appealing by using cookie cutters to create fun shapes with fruits and vegetables like apples and cucumbers, or serve a colorful variety of foods for breakfast and dinner
Exercise: Establish a balanced play regimen for children to limit screen time. On holidays, you can motivate kids to embrace a ‘gadget-free’ day and encourage them to spend time with the entire family. Make sure children engage in a minimum of 3 hours of physical activity daily, which can include activities like swimming, running, skipping, walking, or dancing. Physical activity plays a crucial role in enhancing bone health, and promoting overall physical well-being To promote comprehensive development, a well-rounded diet can enhance the absorption of vital nutrients. If your child doesn’t eat enough calories and nutrients, nutrition supplements can help fill some of the gaps. Supplements act as both gap-covers as well as catalysts, enhancing the body’s capability to absorb essential vitamins and minerals from the foods your child consumes. It’s like turning up the volume on nutrient absorption, so their body can make the most of every single bite.

Chennai, 14th November 2023: In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2023 on November 14th, M.V. Diabetes and Prof. M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre today hosted a grand “Health Conclave: For a Healthy Mind and Body” event aimed at fostering awareness about general well-being and the prevention of diabetes and its associated complications among the public. As part of the event, the renowned institutions proudly introduce “Chennai Slim & Fit 2.0.” This initiative aligns with their ongoing commitment to primary diabetes prevention, particularly focusing on combating the escalating obesity epidemic among children and adolescents in Chennai. The event was graced by the Chief Guest Ms. Nina Reddy, Joint Managing Director of Savera Hotel.
The launch of Chennai Slim and Fit 2.0 is a key highlight of the “Health Conclave – For a Healthy Mind and Body” event. This initiative underscores their unwavering commitment to creating a healthier future for the community.
Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Head & Chief Diabetologist at M.V. Diabetes, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, notably with the CBSE board. Together, they implemented the Comprehensive School Health Manual (CSHM) across all zones in Chennai. An evaluation of the CSHM activities among school children revealed a significant reduction in BMI and body fat percentage, along with a notable decrease in the consumption of junk food in the intervention group compared to the control group. The Chennai Slim and Fit program has been a pivotal activity, featuring numerous screening programs in schools to gauge the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents.
“People should lead an active life when they are still young. At least 45 minutes of exercise, such as swimming, jogging or walking is important. Practicing yoga and meditation can greatly reduce stress, which has emerged as a significant risk factor. It is better that the at-risk population can get used to diabetic food, which is less in carbohydrates and fat. With a balanced diet, regular exercise, lab investigations once in three months, and consultations from a qualified doctor, diabetes can be managed at any stage. Intermittent fasting is a good option to consider in a predominantly carbohydrate-consuming population of India. The obese and the pre-diabetics are particularly the most beneficiary group. Those on insulin should discuss with their physicians before resorting to intermittent fasting”, added Dr Vijay Viswanathan.
In light of the escalating burden of overweight and obesity among not only children but also teenagers and young adults in the post-COVID era, characterized by increased screen time and altered routines, M.V. Diabetes and Prof. M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre have tailored their focus. Building on their past success, the institutions are gearing up to target teenagers and young adults to instill and promote healthy habits for a wholesome life.
For nearly two decades, M.V. Diabetes and Prof. M Viswanathan Research Centre have been at the forefront of efforts to address the root causes of diabetes, concentrating their efforts on the younger population to tackle obesity at its earliest stages. Recognizing the higher incidence of these conditions in private schools compared to government schools, the institutions implemented various behavioral health intervention programs. These initiatives included individualized education sessions conducted by a proficient team comprising psychologists, dietitians, physiotherapists, doctors, and the active involvement of parents and teachers. The positive outcomes encompassed changes in dietary habits, increased physical activity through compulsory participation in physical education classes, promotion of healthy snacks in school canteens, reduction of sedentary activities such as TV watching and mobile gaming, and the instilling of nutrition label reading habits.
A New Milestone in Diabetes Care – Inauguration of novel ‘Diabetes Liver Clinic’ by Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre & Madras Diabetes Research Foundation ~ Landmark initiative to establish nation’s first comprehensive population-based norms for novel
liver function markers across varied age groups~
Chennai, November 08 th , 2023: On the occasion of ‘World Diabetes Day’ (14 th November, 2023), India’s leading Diabetes chain of hospitals – Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, in collaboration with its research wing Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of the first-of-its-kind novel ‘Diabetes Liver Clinic’, a Centre of Excellence dedicated to the research, prevention and management of liver complications in individuals with diabetes. Recent research spotlights the less-appreciated association between diabetes and liver health, as the liver plays a critical role being a glucose storehouse and its susceptibility to conditions such as ‘Fatty Liver’ has recently come into focus. Dr. V. Mohan’s research underscores that over 50% of individuals with type 2 diabetes experience some degree of fatty liver. This sets the stage for ‘Hepatic Insulin Resistance,’ where insulin function in the liver diminishes, leading to elevated glucose release, particularly during fasting, emphasizing the interplay between fatty liver and type 2 diabetes. The evolving understanding of this bidirectional relationship highlights the importance of addressing these conditions holistically, marking a shift from a glucose-centric diabetes treatment approach to a broader metabolic care framework, where the liver plays a central role. In lieu of this, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation are proud to introduce the revolutionary novel Diabetes Liver Clinic marking a significant shift in the approach to diabetes care. Commenting on the launch, Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation stated ” Today signifies a remarkable advancement in the landscape of diabetes care, as we proudly introduce the novel Diabetes Liver Clinic. The recent findings from the ICMR-INDIAB Study, published in the Lancet Diabetes Endocrinology, have shed light on the escalating prevalence of diabetes in India, with a staggering 101 million individuals affected, and an additional 136 million grappling with prediabetes. While the well-documented complications of diabetes affecting the eyes, kidneys, heart, feet, and nerves are widely acknowledged, the subtle yet critical connection between diabetes and liver health has only gained the emphasis on it merits recently. With our ongoing research, the intricate bidirectional relationship between fatty liver and type 2 diabetes are being constantly monitored. Our shift in commitment with the liver now taking centre stage, lies in addressing this evolving challenge by generating essential data, specifically tailored for the Indian population.” Dr. R M Anjana, Managing Director, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre and MDRF expressed “At this momentous juncture, we are thrilled to introduce the novel Diabetes Liver Clinic. The interplay between metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver has brought a new focus and our mission is to assess the prevalence of MAFLD, intervene to prevent its progression, and even strive to reverse it. With the installation of advanced diagnostic technology like the Fibroscan, we are keenly committed to monitoring and addressing several liver complications thereby redefining diabetes care in the country.”
Adding further to this, Dr. Ranjit Unnikrishnan – Vice-President, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre and MDRF said “India’s statistics underscore the urgency for a holistic approach and the launch of the novel Diabetes Liver Clinic by Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation will usher in a new era of comprehensive care, thereby setting a new benchmark for vital research in diabetes management. “ Dr. Aswin Krishna, Consultant Hepatologist, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre stated “ I am happy to be spearhead this clinic under Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre as I believe that we will definitely be able to cater to the increasing demand of the treatment specific for liver related complications due to Diabetes and other NCDs. “ Recognizing the increasing association between metabolic syndrome, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver, the novel clinic will focus on the newly recognized ‘Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease’ (MAFLD), endeavouring to halt its progression and even reverse it. Equipped with advanced diagnostic technology like the Fibroscan, the clinic will not only detect fatty liver but also assess liver fibrosis – a precursor to cirrhosis, which in some cases can be fatal even leading to carcinoma. Topping the list of priorities, the clinic will mainly focus on providing population-based normative data on novel liver function markers in both men and women across different age groups in India.
