Commenting on the launch of AINU Andrology, Dr Arun Kumar, Managing Director, Chief
Consultant Urologist, AINU, Chennai, said, “In the realm of men’s sexual and reproductive health in
India, there exists a significant gap filled by an unorganised sector lacking scientific qualifications.
Adding to this, purchases from OTCs and adult content websites also have adverse side effects. This
often results in patients undergoing misguided treatments, unnecessary investigations, and
incurring substantial expenditures. As pioneers in Urology and Nephrology, we are acutely aware of
the pressing need to rectify this deficiency. Hence, we have taken the decisive step to introduce
specialized Andrology services. Spearheaded by our proficient and seasoned team of clinicians, this
initiative aims to bridge the existing gap in Men’s sexual and Reproductive Health.
Adding to this, Dr. Venkat Subramaniam, Executive Director & Senior Consultant Urologist said,
“The prevalence of Erectile Dysfunction in India is alarmingly high, affecting approximately 30-35%
of men under the age of 40. This statistic is deeply concerning, especially considering the projected
increase in incidence due to prevalent lifestyle issues. However, with the advent of AINU’s Andrology

“Male infertility accounts for a significant portion, approximately 40-50%, of all infertility cases,
often characterized by issues like poor sperm count, which sadly robs many men of the opportunity
to father a biological child. Adding to this challenge is Erectile Dysfunction, another prevalent factor
contributing to infertility.
Compounded by societal taboos and a lack of awareness surrounding men’s reproductive health,
many individuals remain oblivious to the effective treatment pathways available. At AINU
Andrology, our mission is to provide tailored treatment plans, addressing each patient’s unique
needs to yield favorable outcomes. By spearheading this change in men’s healthcare, we aim not

Age No Bar for Major Neuro Surgery – Octogenarian Speaks Again After Four Years!

Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, performed a successful Microvascular Decompression (MVD) surgery, restoring speech in an 85-year-old patient after four years and relieving symptoms of facial pain caused by trigeminal neuralgia. This surgery stands as a testimony to the surgical excellence at the Institute of Brain and Spine and is yet another example of the advancements in surgery techniques and anaesthesia to ensure safe and fast recovery in an elderly patient.

Mr Veerasamy, 85 years old, was suffering from shock-like pains on the left side of the face for more than four years. The pain progressively increased in intensity and frequency, to the extent he was unable to talk, eat or even brush his teeth and shave. A normally outgoing personality, this made him depressed and changed him so much that he stopped talking, stopped going out and stopped interacting with everyone, including his family. Medications did not work and even some medical procedures he underwent gave him only temporary relief. A chance conversation between his son-in-law and Dr Krish Sridhar gave the family a glimmer of hope.

Mr Veerasamy consulted Dr Krish Sridhar, Senior Neurosurgeon and Group Mentor, Neurosciences, at Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road.

“On listening to the symptoms described by Mr Veerasamy, it was obvious that he needed surgery for his condition – trigeminal neuralgia. The only issue was, considering his age, whether he was medically fit to undergo the surgery,” said Dr Krish Sridhar.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition where the patient experiences excruciating pain on the face. It is typically caused by a blood vessel lying in close contact with the trigeminal nerve that transmits sensation from the face to the brain. Due of the constant pulsation of the vessel on the nerve, the latter gets irritated and any sensation is then perceived as pain. If medicines do not work, MVD surgery is the cure.

Dr Krish Sridhar, who has immense experience performing this surgery, said, “MVD surgery is a low-risk surgery which does not destroy any normal structure of the brain. Through surgery, we simply move the offending (albeit normal) vessel away from the nerve.”

Mr Veerasamy underwent the surgery and on waking up from anaesthesia, he was completely free of facial pain. In his words: “I have got a rebirth – I can talk freely, I can eat normally and I can brush my teeth again!” His family is happy that they can hear him speak once again after nearly four years.

Age is not a contraindication for surgery, especially when the patient is suffering from severe pain. Considering the advancements in anaesthesia and modern surgical technologies available, if a patient is medically fit for anaesthesia, the MVD surgery is the best option for a long-term cure for trigeminal neuralgia.

Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, is a leading healthcare institution offering advanced treatments and surgical interventions in neurology, cardiology, women and child wellness, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, joint reconstruction, urology, nephrology and other specialities. American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Coimbatore Reports SuccessfulTreatment of Oropharyngeal Carcinoma in a 70-Year-Old Patient

Coimbatore, December 27, 2023 – American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Coimbatore successfully
treated a 70-year-old male patient diagnosed with Oropharyngeal Carcinoma. Oropharyngeal
carcinoma refers to cancer that develops in the tissues of the oropharynx, which is the part of the
throat at the back of the mouth. It includes regions such as the soft palate, tonsillar area, base of the
tongue, and the posterior (back) wall of the pharynx.
The patient was presented with severe pain in the oral cavity, predominantly on the left side, with
associated discomfort while swallowing and radiating pain to the left ear. During the examination, a
sizable ulcerative growth was found in areas behind the molar teeth on the left side of the mouth,
near the tonsils, and in the left tonsil region. Subsequent biopsy confirmed moderately
differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.
Dr Anbu C, Radiation Oncologist, AOI Coimbatore, stated, “Oropharyngeal cancers, primarily
squamous cell carcinomas, are becoming increasingly prevalent, particularly due to factors like
smoking, tobacco usage, and alcohol abuse. However, there’s a rising incidence of Human Papilloma
Virus (HPV) associated oropharyngeal cancers, notably in non-smokers. It’s important to note that
HPV-associated patients generally have a better prognosis compared to non-associated cases.”
The patient was treated with a radical approach involving Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy
(IMRT) with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) technique alongside concomitant radio sensitizing
chemotherapy. The radiation was directed at treating the main affected areas and high-risk nodes,
with lower doses given to less risky areas as a preventive measure.
“Despite encountering severe odynophagia during the fifth week of radiation therapy, which was
managed symptomatically with the insertion of an NG tube for feeding purposes, the patient
displayed positive progress post-treatment. There was a notable reduction in visible growth in the
oropharynx and retromolar trigone region, with manageable grade 1 dermatitis and grade II
mucositis,” added Dr Anbu C.
Krishna Das, Zonal Director, American Oncology Institute Coimbatore, highlighted, “This case
exemplifies our commitment to advancing cancer treatment and providing personalized care. Our
institute is dedicated to utilizing advanced radiation therapy techniques, like IMRT, to enhance
treatment outcomes while minimizing radiation-related toxicity.”
Oropharyngeal cancer affects approximately 20,000 individuals annually in India. The advancements
in radiation therapy techniques, especially IMRT, have significantly reduced radiation-related side
effects, showcasing substantial progress in oropharyngeal cancer treatment.
American Oncology Institute Coimbatore is a state-of-the-art cancer hospital providing integrated
and complete cancer care and treatment to patients in and around Tamil Nadu. The world-class
facility is opened in collaboration with the Royal Care Super Speciality Hospital in Coimbatore.
Regarded as the best oncology hospital in Coimbatore, AOI provides comprehensive cancer
treatment services to its patients that include Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Medical
Oncology for people across all age groups and gender. At American Oncology Institute, we provide a
wide variety of cancer treatments including chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and more. In addition,
