Largecap: The Pillar of An Investor Portfolio – By Sidhavelayutham,Founder & CEO, Alice Blue.

Investors should always remember that portfolio risk management is as essential as striving
to meet the return objective. There are more than 5000 stocks listed in the Indian stock
market. It is a huge collection of a lot of microcaps, a few smallcaps, some more midcaps
and a handful of largecaps.
Currently, there are a lot of investors who might be thinking that there is no evident benefit of
investing in largecap stocks as the smallcap and midcap stocks are hitting through the roof
and becoming multibaggers by giving double or even triple digit returns in a span of months.
In this kind of return environment, it is very important to understand and recall the concept of
volatility. Smallcaps and midcaps have comparatively much higher volatility against
largecaps. If there is a black swan event in the world such as a war or a global epidemic, the
largecaps will be the one to balance out investors’ losses in other stocks during market fall.
Additionally, there are a lot of global pension funds and large institutional investors which
hold largecap stocks just for getting a regular cash flow stream in the form of dividend
income. In fact, as the standard deviation in these stocks is relatively much lesser, it saves
the investor from large capital losses during instances of market turbulence.
Despite modest growth on a yearly basis, the L&T and TCS of the stock market have been
exceptional compounding stories as the Indian economy rose to periods of super strong
economic growth, higher corporate earnings growth in a declining interest rate environment.
On the other hand, if one looks into smallcap stocks, say for example Brightcom Group there
are a series of days where the stock went through lower circuit/upper circuit patterns
bringing in more stress on any investors’ mindset. Additionally, there is a big issue in terms
of low liquidity when it comes to smallcap stocks.
If the risk profile of an investor is about getting stable returns, then there is no better choice
than largecaps. In fact, the investors can further cut down on their volatility risk by investing
in index funds. These are mutual fund schemes in which the investment is in the top 50
companies by market cap regarded as largecaps. The role of a fund manager is largely
passive here and the portfolio churn cost is limited.
However, if an investor seeks higher growth with some amount of stability to his/her portfolio,
then one should go for a mix of both smallcap/midcap and largecap stocks. The portfolio
allocation of these types would certainly depend on the individual investor risk appetite.

Dalmia Bharat Foundation Empowers 500 Farmers in Tamil Nadu withSolar Light Insect Traps, Promoting Sustainable Agriculture.

Trichy, 30 th January 2024: Taking a significant step towards the promotion of sustainable
agricultural practices, Dalmia Bharat Foundation (DBF), the Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) arm of Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd (DCBL), the leading Indian cement major distributed
Solar Light Insect Traps benefitting 500 farmers from seven village panchayats around
Dalmiapuram, Tamil Nadu. This automatic solar powered device provides a cost-effective and
environmentally friendly solution for pest control, effectively reducing crop damage, and
increasing the yield and income of farmers. This device operates completely autonomously,
utilizing solar energy for charging during the day and seamlessly transitions to operation in the
evening after sunset. The trap works by attracting insects and flies with UV light, causing them
to fly around it, hit the flaps, and eventually fall into a tray filled with water. Recommended by
the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tamil Nadu Agriculture University and the Agriculture
Department of Pest Control, this device is a highly advantageous tool for farmers, contributing
to sustainable and efficient farming practices. The training session and distribution of the solar
light traps for the project were conducted under DBF’s Gram Parivatan Project. Additionally,
100 vermi compost bags and 100 Azollo production bags were distributed to the core village
beneficiaries as part of organic farming practices.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. K Vinayagamurthi, Executive Director and Unit Head,
Dalmiapuram said, “At Dalmia Bharat, we actively engage in farmer education programs,
providing comprehensive training on sustainable agricultural practices to empower
communities for a better livelihood. This technology exemplifies eco-friendly practices by
relying on the abundant renewable source of solar energy and minimizing the environmental
impact. By combining education and innovative solutions, we strive to create a positive impact
on farming communities, promoting resilience, biodiversity and holistic development for a
brighter and more sustainable future for all.”
As part of another initiative focused on empowering women and promoting sustainable
livelihood, DBF conducted a 20-day Aari embroidery training for 20 marginalized women in
Dalmiapuram. Aari embroidery, using a hooked needle, creates intricate designs, often
enhanced with Zari Zardozi—a technique using metallic threads for added shimmer and shine.
Post the completion of the training, the beneficiaries will have the opportunity to receive local
orders, potentially earning a monthly income ranging from Rs. 3000 to 10000. In the FY22-23,
the company provided similar training to 140 women beneficiaries from the surrounding
villages.
Dalmia Bharat Foundation spearheads community development with a focus on rural
upliftment. Under their Gram Parivartan Project it aims to promote economic development in

village households and qualitative improvements in the standard of living for
targeted families in a region.

Ministers Pledge Support and Announce Key Initiatives Committing to Boost Real Estate Industry in TN

~ Tamil Nadu’s Real Estate Outlook Report Unveiled at STATECON 2024 Organised by CREDAI Tamilnadu

Chennai, 29th January 2024: “Of the 43 requests consolidated, we are pleased to say 25 of them are in progress. We also assure the industry your needs are looked into and we will offer the maximum support. We are also looking into the Building Height approvals and FSI etc. and an announcement should be made at the earliest opportunity, said, Thiru. S. Muthusamy, Honorable Minister for Housing & Urban Development, at the inaugural session of South India’s largest Real Estate Conclave – STATECON, organized by CREDAI Tamil Nadu. The theme of the two-day conference was Conservatism to Cosmopolitanism.

Lastly, commenting on the demand for self-certification to ease the approval process, the Minister put it back asking what about deviations. Would the industry take responsibility for the deviations? If the responses are favorable, it can be considered,” he concluded.

Thiru. P.K. Sekar Babu, Honourable Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and CMDA in his speech said, “The request for Single window clearance is on the cards. Between 2021-2023, 605 approvals were granted for NHRB when compared to 426 earlier. Also, layout approvals have grown from 197 to 305 and reclassification has increased by 300% based on plan approvals,”.

“Overall, we witness major progress throughout the State but, we can do a lot more if we work together. The commitment of 60 days to process and approve will be truly possible only when we get all the papers and documents that are asked for from your side on time. So, to make things work, we need to work closely,” he added.

A report by Frank Knight and CREDAI Tamil Nadu was released at the conference with the State Ministers receiving the copies along with other members of CREDAI.

The report states, “In FY 23, Tamil Nadu, the second-largest economy in India, demonstrated a dynamic economic structure with the tertiary sector leading at 53%, followed by the secondary sector at 34%, and the primary sector at 13%. The state’s economy, valued at USD 294 billion, showcased an impressive average annual growth of 11% from FY 9 to 2019. Foreign direct investments and private equity inflows reached USD 81 billion post the global investors’ meet, affirming the state’s appeal. Tamil Nadu’s stock market engaged 4.7 million investors with USD 28 billion assets under management, predominantly in equity (59%),”.

“Notably, the construction sector, currently valued at USD 32 billion in FY 23, is projected to reach USD 208 billion by FY 47, reflecting a significant opportunity for real estate stakeholders. Furthermore, the manufacturing sector, constituting 19% of the state’s economy, is expected to expand to USD 374 billion by FY 48, necessitating 2.25 lakh hectares of industrial land. To support this growth, enhancing capital expenditure to 5.7% of the GSDP is crucial. The state must undertake a cumulative capex exceeding USD 110 billion over the next 24 years to ensure robust infrastructure for sustained development. Key advisory measures include targeted retail policies, leveraging textile strengths, and strategic promotion of tourism. The report provides comprehensive insights for stakeholders to engage in further discussions and capitalize on the potential outlined,”.

Mr. R. Ilankovan, President, CREDAI TAMILNADU, in his speech appealed to the Hon’ble Ministers at the conference to regulate, reduce, and limit the number of approvals so that the industry can grow quicker and achieve the targeted numbers, particularly DTCP approvals. Also, DTCP should give a revised master plan as the current ones are all outdated,”.

He further suggested that all approvals and payments could be made to DTCP instead of the industry dealing with multiple local authorities, this would lead to time efficiency as the delays in approvals result in a higher cost for the buyer eventually.

“The recent global investors’ meeting has proven to be a remarkable success, resulting in the signing of Rs. 6.36 lakh crore worth of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). This development marks a significant stride for Tamil Nadu as it sets ambitious goals to transform into a one-trillion-dollar economy,” said Mr. W.S. Habib, Chairman – STATECON 2024 in his welcome address.

“Tamil Nadu has been growing in all trends and is at the forefront in this transformation. Our state has been an icon of innovation and progress setting benchmarks for others to follow other states. A recent report states that commercial space absorption is 11 million square feet. This proves Tamil Nadu is ranked in the second or third highest absorption of space in India when compared to other states,” said Mr. Sridharan, Vice President, South Zone, CREDAI National.

“Tamil Nadu is truly a cosmopolitan state, given our diverse dependencies on various sectors such as career development, agriculture, tourism, healthcare, transportation, and the intricate network of logistics and finance circuits at the state level. Our industrial landscape boasts considerable diversity, setting us apart from states like Bangalore and Hyderabad, where their focus is often singular,” Mr. Srinivas Ankipatti, Sr Director- Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Knight and Frank India.

“I strongly encourage all members, ministers, and stakeholders to seize this forum as an opportunity to initiate a departure from conventional thinking. Let’s embrace this positive momentum,” he added.

Mr. M V R Murali Krishna, General Manager, State Bank of India , said, “There is a huge growth potential for Chennai and Tamil Nadu as a whole, given the rich culture, industrialization, and excellent infrastructure. Housing growth serves as an indicator of regional economic development, contributing 7% to the country’s GDP and is expected to touch 13% of the GDP by 2025,”

Mr. S. Anand Secretary CREDAI Tamil Nadu delivered the vote of thanks by thanking the Hon’ble Ministers for taking time to be present at the inaugural session of STATECON 2024 while also encouraging the industry members stating announcements will be made shortly that will tremendously lift the morale and eventually help buyers invest in the real estate market.

Better Connecting Users and Devices through Spatial Intelligence
Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, highlighted the exciting new ways in
which AI technology is impacting the relationship between users and their devices, including Samsung’s
vision for SmartThings: The more Samsung devices a customer uses, the smarter those devices become
and the better they can understand and support daily life.
Spatial AI is the key to enabling this vision, by helping devices understand the living space and routines of
the user, thus enabling more a personalized home management experience. SmartThings uses LiDAR 9 on
connected devices like robot vacuums to create digital floor plans so users can easily check the status and
location of all their devices. And in March, SmartThings will roll out the upgraded 3D Map View for a more
detailed experience on Samsung smartphones and TVs. Furthermore, a simple QR code will allow users to
add family and friends to their SmartThings ecosystem, so that every member of the household can create
their own routines.
Using smart sensors and AI, SmartThings can detect unusual circumstances, such as a fall, and send alerts
to designated family and caregivers. Also, thanks to the Galaxy SmartTag2, users can track their pets’
activities and digitally store identifying information by attaching the tag to a collar or harness 10 .
Another point EVP Jung discussed was how the Bixby voice assistant is allowing smart homes to become
more dynamic with its enhanced AI capabilities. Bixby can now automatically route commands to the most
appropriate devices based on an understanding of the user’s location and activities. Key technologies like
Multi Device Wakeup combined with a shared communication protocol, enable Bixby to listen to commands
with all the devices in a room but then only perform the requested action on the most relevant device. So if a
user is in the kitchen watching a recipe video on their Family Hub™, and they can call out, “Hey, Bixby! Play
music!” At that point, music will play from the user’s smart speaker, but the recipe video will continue to play
on the Family Hub™, uninterrupted.
The TV, with the Samsung Daily+ service, will increasingly become a central hub for much of this smart
home functionality, while also granting access to a variety of additional services. These include video calls
through ConnecTime, video veterinary consultation services 11 , and Workout Tracker — through which
workout data can be transferred to Samsung’s smart watches. Samsung also announced the new Samsung
Now+ service, which displays useful information about users’ homes, such as the weather or a live security
camera feed from a home security system without the TV even being turned on. As is the case with
SmartThings features, users can also access this information via voice command.
Bringing the Home and Car Closer Together With Home-to-Car Capabilities
Samsung also announced developments in the automotive industry, starting with a partnership with Hyundai
Motor Group. Samsung and Hyundai have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which was
announced ahead of CES 2024. Under the agreement, users will have access to Home-to-Car and Car-to-
Home services, courtesy of SmartThings connectivity. Haeyoung Kwon, Head of Infotainment Development
Center and SDV 12 Execution Sub-Division at Hyundai Motor Group, delivered remarks regarding the
partnership.
“Using Hyundai Motor Group’s software-defined vehicle, SmartThings will now work with Hyundai, Kia, and
Genesis vehicles through the app,” Kwon said. “All of us at Hyundai Motor Group appreciate our partnership
with Samsung, and we’re excited about the new features we’re bringing to your vehicles through smarter
connectivity.”
9 Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is an optical technology used for distance sensing.
10 Contact information and message shown on Lost Mode must be registered beforehand on the SmartThings application, along with
user registration by email. The SmartTag2 finder’s device must support NFC reading and be connected to the internet.
11 Samsung Daily+ offers access to 3 rd party veterinary consultation services such as Dr. Tail.

Through SmartThings, users will be able to utilize voice commands to remotely perform functions in their car,
such as heating it up in advance or opening and closing windows. SmartThings connectivity goes the other
way, too, with users able to control home functions from their vehicle. Users will be able to automatically
open and close garage doors based on the location of the car, as well as regulate home temperature. All of
these actions can be carried out via voice commands.
Additionally, Samsung has further deepened the longstanding partnership with HARMAN to elevate the way
users experience driving. Michelle Gattuso, Vice President of Product Management at HARMAN, discussed
how the two companies are building new technologies to elevate the driving experience.
“Samsung’s leadership in consumer technology — together with HARMAN’s automotive expertise — has
opened the door to game-changing experiences like HARMAN Ready Care, Ready Vision and Ready
Display,” Gattuso said. “But now, the work we do with Samsung is getting even more integrated. Samsung
and HARMAN are working in lockstep to bring even more impactful experiences to the entire in-cabin
ecosystem.”
HARMAN’s Ready Care, which focuses on driver safety, implements deep learning neural networking
techniques to monitor the driver’s movement and cognitive alertness, and can provide personalized
reminders and alerts. Additionally, Ready Care can now identify whether passengers are adults or children,
and adjust airbag deployment settings accordingly.
Furthermore, Ready Vision brings an intuitive display directly to windshields — courtesy of augmented reality
— in drivers’ line of sight, right when they need it. For example, drivers have access to a map that updates
according to routes in real time, as well as recommendations for the fastest route or where to stop for coffee.
Another HARMAN product, Ready Upgrade, allows automakers to frequently update their vehicle’s hardware
and software. This keeps vehicles relevant, modern and efficient for longer.
Samsung Focuses on Security and Privacy Across Devices
In this future of AI-enabled, deeply interconnected devices, Samsung recognizes that security and privacy
are paramount. Shin Baik from the Mobile Experience Security Team discussed the company’s security
solutions as a foundation for the hyper-connected era.
One such solution is Samsung Knox Matrix, which now provides end-to-end encryption across many
Samsung Galaxy smartphones and smart TVs. The technology will allow devices to monitor each other to
identify and isolate security threats. Knox Vault, which helps keep user data safe on some of Samsung’s
most popular devices, has been expanded to cover more devices connected by SmartThings, such as
Samsung Neo QLED 8K TVs. Additionally, Samsung’s partnerships with major tech companies allow users
to experience security and privacy in a way that is tailored to their specific needs.
Samsung Makes Strides in Responsible Materials, Energy Management, and Accessibility
Meanwhile, Inhee Chung, Vice President of the Samsung Corporate Sustainability Center, highlighted
Samsung’s plans for a more circular economy. As part of these plans, Samsung increasingly incorporates
recycled materials into its products — including recycled plastic sourced from discarded fishing nets in
Galaxy devices 13 , recycled plastic in TVs, and recycled aluminum in Bespoke refrigerators 14 . Additionally, the
company’s Certified ReNewed program — available in the U.S. and select European countries — offers
affordable refurbished phones, while Galaxy Upcycling allows consumers to reuse or repurpose their old
phones in creative ways. The company plans to scale up recycling and upcycling, as well.
As for the ways Samsung’s technology contributes to sustainability efforts, the company is utilizing AI to
make the use of its products more energy-efficient through features like SmartThings AI Energy Mode, which
automatically optimizes energy usage to help users save electricity. These features are yet another example
13 Recycled plastic sourced from discarded fishing nets are incorporated into the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy S23 series,
Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Flip4, Galaxy Z Fold4, Galaxy Z Flip5, Galaxy Z Fold5, Galaxy Tab S9 Series, Galaxy Tab S9 FE series,
Galaxy Book3 series, Galaxy Book4 series, Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Galaxy Buds FE and more.
14 Recycled Aluminum is incorporated into BESPOKE refrigerator door panels for models including RQ38B9981APG, RR40B9971APG,
RR40B99C5AP/, RW33B99, RW33B99C5TF/, RZ38B98, and RZ38B98C5AP/**

of how AI technology will not only make lives easier, but also allow consumers to live in a way that is more
environmentally and economically responsible.
Thanks to a new collaboration with Tesla, SmartThings Energy is becoming even more useful both inside
and outside of the home. The collaboration has integrated SmartThings Energy with Tesla products,
including electric vehicles (EVs), the Powerwall home battery, Solar Inverter and Wall Connector EV charging
solution. Another benefit is that SmartThings Energy users can take advantage of the Tesla app’s Powerwall
“Storm Watch” function, which flags severe weather through SmartThings not only on the Tesla app, but also
on users’ connected Samsung TVs and mobile phones. SmartThings can also help users prepare for power
outages by activating AI Energy Mode to extend the usage time of backup energy stored in their Tesla
Powerwalls.
Samsung is adding new features to increase device accessibility, such as digital appliances responding to
hands-free gestures. Additionally, mobile devices provide auto-generated captions during calls, and TVs and
displays offer a new, AI-enabled text-to-speech feature that converts subtitles into spoken audio. To further
aid those with low vision, Relumino Together is a new viewing mode on Samsung TVs that enables users of
all abilities to watch TV together, with or without visual adjustments. Now, everyone can enjoy home
entertainment together at the same time.
