Chennai, June 25, 2024: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has showcased its unwavering commitment to giving a boost to quality apprenticeship skill training across sectors as the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is seeing a major uptick. In the past 3 years, the total enrolments have grown three-fold to touch 9,31,368 youth under National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) in FY2023- 24. Maharashtra saw an impressive participation of 2,63,156 youth in the scheme, highlighting its ability in building pathways for fresh talent to build their capabilities, enhance job readiness and making them job ready. The other states are Tamil Nadu (1,01,495), Gujarat (83,730), Karnataka (78,444) and Uttar Pradesh (71,444). There are more than 5.5 lakh vacancies available under apprenticeship on the portal as of now which keeps on consistently increasing and this has immense potential to extend benefits to youth in rural and semi-urban areas in facilitating their smooth transition from education to workforce, thereby, making them job ready professionals. It creates pathways for fresh talent to uplift their capabilities, improve apprentices’ engagement within establishments and provide awareness to the youth on various opportunities existing across the participating companies. MSDE has undertaken several initiatives to reform the apprenticeship ecosystem in India, including active involvement with stakeholders, launch of DBT under NAPS and mandates companies with 30 or more employees to engage apprentices. Additionally, the apprenticeship portal allows the candidates to explore job opportunities across sectors and filter data based on the academic qualifications and skills that aligns with their aspirations.

Shri Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary, MSDE said, “To date, over 32 lakh youth have been engaged as apprentices in various apprenticeship programs across 36 sectors in the country. We are currently working with more than 110 industry clusters, encompassing one-third of India’s districts. The direct benefit transfer of stipends has significantly enhanced the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), with more than INR 350 crores disbursed to apprentices’ accounts since its launch last year. The next phase of the scheme will undoubtedly see an increased percentage of apprentices receiving hands-on training across establishments.” Efforts have been taken to spearhead the benefits of Apprenticeship training and vocational training to meet the industry demands while providing on the job training and opportunities for aspiring professionals. The trend indicates a promising opportunity for employers to hire apprentices and aid them in discovering the right job roles while maximising their potential through in-depth skill development. Apprenticeship training is one of the key components for creating skilled manpower in India to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat. Amendments in 2014 to the Apprentices Act, 1961 and the Rules in 2019 and launch of NAPS, have been carried out to facilitate the establishments to engage a greater number of apprentices. BENGALURU, JUNE 24 th , 2024— Kennametal India Limited, together with Planet Sutra, a sustainability implementation partner, held an event today to mark the completion of the Harokethanahalli lake restoration project at Bengaluru, India. The project spans nearly 18 acres of land, and the lake itself has a capacity of over 140 million liters of water. Situated amidst agricultural land, commercial orchards and private farmhouses, and yet away from the public water supply system, the main source of water in the region is groundwater that is extracted through deeply dug borewells for consumption. Further, the hard rocky strata and steep slopes make it challenging for rainwater to percolate into aquifer zones and its runoff rapidly erodes the fertile soil. This initiative is expected to restore the quality of water of the lake and free it from garbage, effluents, and other pollutants. It should also raise the groundwater table by eight meters, benefitting up to 5000 people living in and around the Harokethanahalli lake. Another key benefit is the revival of the surrounding flora and fauna. Coimbatore, June 23rd 2024: In a commendable effort to contribute to environmental sustainability, the children from Coimbatore Metropolitan Ladies Circle 23 organized a plantation drive at Kumaraswamy Lake in RS Puram. Demonstrating their commitment to a greener future, they donated and planted over 100 saplings around the lake.
The initiative, held under the slogan “Plant a Tree Today for a Better Tomorrow,” aims to enhance the green cover around Kumaraswamy Lake, fostering a healthier ecosystem. The event saw enthusiastic participation from children, who were guided by volunteers and members of the Coimbatore Metropolitan Ladies Circle 23.
The event began with a brief educational session on the importance of trees in combating climate change, maintaining ecological balance, and providing clean air. Following this, the children, armed with gardening tools and saplings, eagerly participated in planting various native species around the lake.
Chief Guest Cr. Rani Mohan, Area 7 ACP, Ladies Circle India and Chairperson Cr Sapna Nagpal, CMLC 23 congratulated the children and applauded their dedication towards the cause.
Chennai, June 22, 2024: Mr E. Manikandan, a 23-year-old software professional from Chennai, has become the first person in Tamil Nadu to receive synthetic ligaments, as he successfully underwent an arthroscopy surgery today at Rela Hospital for the multi-ligament knee injury he sustained in a road accident three months ago. The surgeons used artificial ligaments to reconstruct two cruciate ligaments, the ones that are found inside the knee.
In a staged intervention, surgeons at Rela Hospital first stabilised the patient’s fractured pelvic region with external fixation and repaired a few other damaged ligaments and nerves in the knee. After a gap of three months, they performed an hour-long arthroscopy procedure today using synthetic ligaments, imported from the United Kingdom, and successfully reconstructed the two cruciate ligaments – namely, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). This advanced procedure marks a significant milestone in the treatment of complex knee injuries in Tamil Nadu.
ACL and PCL are the knee’s primary ligaments. They join thigh bones to the bones of the lower leg. Injuries to two or more of these primary ligaments are called multi-ligament knee injuries. These injuries are often associated with high-energy trauma, such as road accidents or sports injuries. Patients with multi-ligament knee injuries face a high risk of long-term morbidity, including chronic pain, instability, and impaired mobility.
Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO, Rela Hospital said, “Surgeons traditionally use either autograft, which involves harvesting and using ligaments of the patient’s own body, or allograft, wherein ligaments of the cadaver or amputated legs. These treatment approaches can lead to prolonged rehabilitation periods and incomplete recovery, affecting the patient’s quality of life and ability to return to work or sports. However, synthetic ligaments have come as a boon for patients with multi ligament injuries as they eliminate many of the shortcomings of the traditional methods.”
The arthroscopy procedure was performed by Dr. Prakash Ayyadurai, Senior Consultant Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine of Rela Hospital, and his team in the presence of Dr. Ashok S. Gavaskar, Clinical Lead – Orthopaedics, Head of Joint Replacement Services, Rela Hospital and Dr. Parthasarathy Srinivasan, Senior Consultant – Orthopaedics, Head – Spine Surgery, Rela Hospital. The surgery went eventless, and the patient is expected to be discharged from the hospital within a week’s time. He can take up his routine activities without any restrictions, forgetting his painful and complex injury as a bad dream.
In his comments, Dr. Ayyadurai said, “Though arthroscopy surgery is not new, it is for the first time this minimally-invasive procedure was performed using synthetic ligaments, which have come as a viable and preferred alternative for both autograft and allograft. The traditional methods of autograft and allograft have their own disadvantages. In autograft, an additional surgery has to be performed to harvest ligament from the patient’s own body. The risks include infection and other complications, besides the likelihood of reduced function and a permanent discomfort at the donor’s site. Similarly, in the case of allograft, there is a waiting period. Ligaments are difficult to procure in India as the availability is limited. There are also regulatory challenges. However, synthetic ligaments are readily available. They do not require regulatory approvals. Best of all, the recovery and rehabilitation time for the patient is in days, instead of weeks or months as is the case with procedures based on autograft and allograft.
Dr. Klaudiusz Kosowski, Medical Director and Chairman, MedPolonia Private Hospital, Poland pointed out that the synthetic ligaments are made of a strong polythene material and are on par with the natural ligaments in terms of strength and durability. “Considering that about 15-20% of all knee injuries are multiligament knee injuries that require reconstruction of ligaments, synthetic ligaments can be a game changer in arthroscopy.”

This initiative aims to raise awareness and equip the community with essential Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills.
The event, held during the morning hours of Sunday at Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar, was presided over by Prof. Dr. Ashok Thiagarajan, CEO of Meridian Hospital.
Around 100 participants actively engaged in the session, gaining valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in performing CPR. The program was led by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Medical Superintendent, Aswani Latha, Cardiologist and Dr Jananee, Emergency physician of Meridian Hospital, along with their dedicated medical team, who provided a comprehensive and interactive CPR training session.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Early CPR can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, awareness and training in CPR among the general public in India remain critically low, with studies indicating that less than 2% of the population is trained in this life-saving technique. This underscores the urgent need for widespread CPR education and training.
The human life during such sudden heart attacks can be saved through a simple first aid and lifesaving activity called CPR.
