Setting New Standards: Supraorbital Keyhole Craniotomy at Kauvery Hospital Vadapalani brings new hope to a 69-year-old woman from Africa

Chennai 3rd July 2024: Kauvery Hospital Vadapalani continues to stand out as a leading destination for International Patients seeking specialized medical care, showcased by the recent successful treatment of a 69-year-old Sudanese woman with a complex brain tumor under the expert guidance of Dr. Ranganathan Jothi, a neurosurgeon with three decades of experience. The medical team at Kauvery Institute of Neurosciences performed a highly intricate and precision-driven Supraorbital Craniotomy—a minimally invasive procedure with a keyhole approach involving a small incision along the eyebrow—to delicately remove the tumor.

Craniotomy, a surgical procedure where a portion of the skull is temporarily removed to access the brain, is inherently complex due to the intricate anatomy and critical functions of the brain. The procedure’s complexity is magnified when dealing with tumors near vital structures, necessitating extreme precision to avoid damaging healthy tissue. Traditional craniotomies often involve larger incisions, leading to extended recovery periods and heightened risks of complications such as infection, excessive bleeding, and significant scarring.

In this case, the supraorbital craniotomy was selected due to its minimally invasive nature, which offers substantial benefits. By making a small incision along the eyebrow, surgeons could access and remove the tumor while minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues. This approach significantly reduces scarring, minimizes the risk of complications, and promotes faster recovery while ensuring complete tumor removal. The precision of this technique is particularly advantageous for tumors located in sensitive areas, providing a safer and more effective alternative to traditional methods.

Under high-resolution microscopic guidance and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, the surgical team was able to navigate the intricate anatomy of the brain with unparalleled precision. These advanced techniques ensured the keyhole surgery was performed with maximum accuracy, reducing the risk of damage to healthy tissues and critical brain structures. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring further provided real-time feedback on the patient’s neural functions, ensuring that the tumor was removed completely without compromising vital brain functions.

Dr. Ranganathan Jothi’s expertise and the hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities played a pivotal role in the successful outcome of this complex surgery. “At Kauvery Hospital Vadapalani, we are committed to delivering world-class treatment and compassionate care to all our patients, including those who travel from abroad seeking specialized medical expertise,” emphasized Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals. “Our commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical innovation ensures that each patient receives personalized attention and the highest standards of care.”

The benefits of the minimally invasive left supraorbital craniotomy are profound. By minimizing the incision size, patients experience less postoperative pain and discomfort. This approach also reduces the risk of infection, as smaller incisions are less prone to complications. Additionally, the shorter recovery time allows patients to return to their normal activities more quickly, improving their overall quality of life. These advantages make the procedure particularly suitable for elderly patients, like the 69-year-old Sudanese woman, who may have a lower tolerance for extensive surgical interventions.

International patients choose Kauvery Hospital Vadapalani not only for its advanced medical technologies and expert medical professionals but also for its commitment to providing a supportive environment that fosters hope and healing. The hospital’s reputation for excellence in neurosurgery and other specialties continues to attract patients from around the world, seeking optimal outcomes and compassionate care.

Rela Hospital Becomes First in Tamil Nadu to Use Synthetic Ligament for Treating Knee Injury

Chennai, June 22, 2024: Mr E. Manikandan, a 23-year-old software professional from Chennai, has become the first person in Tamil Nadu to receive synthetic ligaments, as he successfully underwent an arthroscopy surgery today at Rela Hospital for the multi-ligament knee injury he sustained in a road accident three months ago. The surgeons used artificial ligaments to reconstruct two cruciate ligaments, the ones that are found inside the knee.

In a staged intervention, surgeons at Rela Hospital first stabilised the patient’s fractured pelvic region with external fixation and repaired a few other damaged ligaments and nerves in the knee. After a gap of three months, they performed an hour-long arthroscopy procedure today using synthetic ligaments, imported from the United Kingdom, and successfully reconstructed the two cruciate ligaments – namely, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). This advanced procedure marks a significant milestone in the treatment of complex knee injuries in Tamil Nadu.

ACL and PCL are the knee’s primary ligaments. They join thigh bones to the bones of the lower leg. Injuries to two or more of these primary ligaments are called multi-ligament knee injuries. These injuries are often associated with high-energy trauma, such as road accidents or sports injuries. Patients with multi-ligament knee injuries face a high risk of long-term morbidity, including chronic pain, instability, and impaired mobility.

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO, Rela Hospital said, “Surgeons traditionally use either autograft, which involves harvesting and using ligaments of the patient’s own body, or allograft, wherein ligaments of the cadaver or amputated legs. These treatment approaches can lead to prolonged rehabilitation periods and incomplete recovery, affecting the patient’s quality of life and ability to return to work or sports. However, synthetic ligaments have come as a boon for patients with multi ligament injuries as they eliminate many of the shortcomings of the traditional methods.”

The arthroscopy procedure was performed by Dr. Prakash Ayyadurai, Senior Consultant Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine of Rela Hospital, and his team in the presence of Dr. Ashok S. Gavaskar, Clinical Lead – Orthopaedics, Head of Joint Replacement Services, Rela Hospital and Dr. Parthasarathy Srinivasan, Senior Consultant – Orthopaedics, Head – Spine Surgery, Rela Hospital. The surgery went eventless, and the patient is expected to be discharged from the hospital within a week’s time. He can take up his routine activities without any restrictions, forgetting his painful and complex injury as a bad dream.

In his comments, Dr. Ayyadurai said, “Though arthroscopy surgery is not new, it is for the first time this minimally-invasive procedure was performed using synthetic ligaments, which have come as a viable and preferred alternative for both autograft and allograft. The traditional methods of autograft and allograft have their own disadvantages. In autograft, an additional surgery has to be performed to harvest ligament from the patient’s own body. The risks include infection and other complications, besides the likelihood of reduced function and a permanent discomfort at the donor’s site. Similarly, in the case of allograft, there is a waiting period. Ligaments are difficult to procure in India as the availability is limited. There are also regulatory challenges. However, synthetic ligaments are readily available. They do not require regulatory approvals. Best of all, the recovery and rehabilitation time for the patient is in days, instead of weeks or months as is the case with procedures based on autograft and allograft.

Dr. Klaudiusz Kosowski, Medical Director and Chairman, MedPolonia Private Hospital, Poland pointed out that the synthetic ligaments are made of a strong polythene material and are on par with the natural ligaments in terms of strength and durability. “Considering that about 15-20% of all knee injuries are multiligament knee injuries that require reconstruction of ligaments, synthetic ligaments can be a game changer in arthroscopy.”

Meridian Hospital organizes CPR Awareness & training for General Public: Let us BEAT the HEART

Chennai 23rd June 2024: Meridian Hospital, a 300-bedded Multi-Super Specialty Hospital known for its comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to healthcare, organised a crucial public awareness and training session, “Let Us BEAT the HEART”. This initiative aims to raise awareness and equip the community with essential Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills.

The event, held during the morning hours of Sunday at Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar, was presided over by Prof. Dr. Ashok Thiagarajan, CEO of Meridian Hospital.

Around 100 participants actively engaged in the session, gaining valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in performing CPR. The program was led by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Medical Superintendent, Aswani Latha, Cardiologist and Dr Jananee, Emergency physician of Meridian Hospital, along with their dedicated medical team, who provided a comprehensive and interactive CPR training session.

Meridian Hospital’s medical team demonstrated to the general public, morning walkers, elderly people, police personnel, auto rickshaw drivers, and others how to perform CPR and potentially save lives during a heart attack.

As part of Meridian Hospital’s commitment to saving precious human lives, this event was organized to coincide with World Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Day, observed globally during this period. This initiative underscores the hospital’s dedication to enhancing public health and safety through education and proactive healthcare measures.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Early CPR can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, awareness and training in CPR among the general public in India remain critically low, with studies indicating that less than 2% of the population is trained in this life-saving technique. This underscores the urgent need for widespread CPR education and training.

The human life during such sudden heart attacks can be saved through a simple first aid and lifesaving activity called CPR.

Meril Announces Prestigious LANCET Publication for Landmark RCT of the MYVAL THV Series, Researched and Developed by INDIA

~ Meril Life Sciences is proud to announce that its LANDMARK randomized controlled trial (RCT) for the MYVAL THV series has been published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet ~

~ This recognition underscores the significance and impact of the MYVAL THV series, a pioneering medical device researched and developed entirely in India ~

Chennai, June 19th, 2024: Meril Life Sciences, an India-based global medical device company, recently conducted a trial study titled ‘Comparison of Early Outcomes of Newer-Generation Myval Transcatheter Heart Valve Series with Contemporary Valves (Sapien and Evolut) THV Series in Real-World Individuals with Severe Symptomatic Native Aortic Stenosis: A Randomised Non-Inferiority Trial’. The LANDMARK randomized controlled trial for the MYVAL THV series has been published in The Lancet, a prestigious medical journal.

Sharing details about the same, Prof. Andreas Baumbach, Global Principal Investigator said, “The Landmark trial showed that the Myval THV series performed as safely and effectively as contemporary THV series. It is a valve made for everyday clinical practice and an all-comers population. The special feature of intermediate diameters allows for more accurate sizing, which has the potential to translate into improved long-term outcomes. Our patients will be followed up for 10 years and it will be interesting to see the long-term results in the three treatment arms.”

This pivotal research compares early outcomes of the new-generation Myval THV series with contemporary (Sapien and Evolut) THV series in real-world patients suffering from severe symptomatic native aortic stenosis (AS). The findings highlight that the Myval THV series is non-inferior to global giants.

On the milestone achievement Interventional cardiologist Dr G.Sengottuvelu,  said,We are elated and proud at being the first medical device company in India to research and develop MYVAL THV series. Being featured in Lancet underscores the significance and impact of the MYVAL THV series. Also, this has proved India’s capability to set new standards in cardiovascular care, revolutionising heart valve treatment worldwide. This trial also reiterates the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.”

Explaining the importance of THV series, Dr John Jose E, Interventional cardiologist said, The LANDMARK Trial is a well-designed multi-center international study that has established comparable safety and effectiveness of made-in-India Myval trans-catheter heart valve with contemporary western manufactured ones. The results of the study and features of this valve have been well-received by the global interventional Cardiology community. As one of the leading trans-catheter aortic valve implanters’ (TAVI operator) in the country, I am not at all surprised by the results of the study. The study findings align with our clinical experiences in a multinational randomized control trial environment. A considerable number of our Indian patients have surpassed the five-year follow-up mark, and the long-term outcomes appear promising.

The release of this research is a significant milestone, not just for the Indian device sector, but also for the global aortic stenosis patient-population as a whole. The availability of an affordable, safe

and efficacious valve for trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI- a non-surgical alternative treatment) would greatly benefit patients in emerging nations like India, as well as in advanced countries around the globe.

Dr. Thomas Alexander, Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist and Head of Division of Cardiology at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, Coimbatore said that MYVAL THV series is a novel THV that comes in various size options compared to currently available THVs, making it easier to find the right fit for different patients.

The Myval THV series is available in a wide range of sizes, including traditional sizes (20 mm, 23 mm, 26 mm, and 29 mm), intermediate sizes (21.5 mm, 24.5 mm, and 27.5 mm), and larger sizes (30.5 mm and 32 mm). This extensive range ensures that more patients receive a valve that closely matches their anatomical needs, potentially improving outcomes and making advanced heart valve treatment more accessible to a broader population.

70-Year-Old Patient Successfully Treated for Uncontrolled Hypertension Through Renal Denervation Therapy

A 70-year-old gentleman, who had been suffering from chronichigh blood pressure and uncontrolled hypertension for the past six years, was successfully treated at Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, through a procedure called renal denervation.

The patient had been battling with hypertension since 2019. Despite taking five different medicines for high blood pressure and even after increasing the dosage over a period of time, his blood pressurecontinued to be as high as 200/120mm Hg and the associated symptoms like frequent headaches and palpitations affected his quality of life.

With such uncontrolled hypertension posing the risk of many serious health conditions like stroke, heart attack and kidney failure, Prof Dr Ajith Pillai, Chief Cardiologist and Head of Department, recommended the latest electrically modulated renal denervation (RDN) treatment. This procedure was performed in the Cath Labunder local anesthesia, using radiofrequency ablation to control the patient’s renal nerve excitability. This effective treatment option is not only minimally invasive but also reduces nerve activity to achieve long-term stabilisation of blood pressure.

Following the procedure, the patient was discharged after 48 hours.Depending on the health status, some patients can also be discharged even within 24 hours. A month later, the patient’s blood pressure is well under control, with readings consistently in the range of 140/80mm Hg. He is free from the symptoms he experienced earlier and has been able to reduce the BP medicines significantly.

“The Heart Institute at Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, is a tertiary centre of excellence that offers high-end care and runs an active hypertension screening and treatment program. It is one of the referral centres for RDN therapy, which would benefit patients who have uncontrolled blood pressure,” said Prof Dr Ajith Pillai.

Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, is a leading healthcare institution offering advanced treatments and surgical interventions in neurology, cardiology, women and child wellness, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, joint reconstruction, urology, nephrology and other specialities. With a dedicated team of experts and state-of-the-art medical facilities including 50+ critical care beds, 20+ NICU beds, 7+ operation theatres, advanced Cath labs, cutting-edge neuro diagnostic equipment like 3T MRI and 4K + 3D neuro microscope, transplant facilities and 24/7 dialysis unit, it provides world-class medical care to patients from around the globe.

Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, Launches Kauvery Integrated Stroke Centre – an Advanced and Comprehensive Centre for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disorders

Stroke, or brain attack, is one of the common causes of disability and death in the world. It is not as uncommon as was previously thought. The World Stroke Organization says that 1 in 4 people will, at some point of time, suffer a stroke. It is, therefore, extremely important that we take cognizance of this highly prevalent problem and do what is necessary to help the society.

A stroke may either occur when the blood vessel to the brain is blocked (Acute Ischaemic Stroke) or when there is bleeding in the brain (Haemorrhagic Stroke). In both these instances, the symptoms are almost the same. It is imperative that the patient reaches a Stroke Centre as soon as possible because with current management protocols, it is possible to reduce or even reverse a stroke. Lives can be saved and disability reduced – but the patient must reach on time. This is because for every second lost, 30,000 brain cells die and for every minute lost, 2 million brain cells die.

The Institute of Brain and Spine at Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, is happy to announce that within one year since we began treating patients at our hospital, it has been awarded the prestigious Gold Status by the WSO Angels Awards. The hospital, therefore, is ready to go to the next level and has now launched KISC – Kauvery Integrated Stroke Centre. This is an advanced and comprehensive centre for treating stroke and all cerebrovascular disorders under one roof.

“The key words are ‘Advanced’ and ‘Integrated’ – while there may be many Stroke Centres, few have all the different specialties involved working together, in a seamless fashion, in order to ensure that time is saved and the best is done for the patient. Starting from the ER to Radiology to Neurology and Neuro ICU, Neuro Intervention, Neuro OT and finally Neuro Rehabilitation, the Stroke Corridor of KISC ensures a smooth protocol-based management, which has now been acknowledged by the World Stroke Organization. At KISC, we have the technology, the experience and the expertise and, most importantly, the teamwork to achieve the best of results in stroke management,” said Dr Krish Sridhar, Group Mentor, Neurosciences, & Director, Institute of Brain & Spine.

“Every second makes a difference to stroke patients. When they are brought here within the golden hour – 60 minutes – from the onset of stroke symptoms or even within 24 hours, the team at Kauvery Integrated Stroke Centre work relentlessly to reverse stroke and provide optimal outcome for them. As an advanced Stroke Centre, we provide them the best possible chance through international standards of care and a seamless, cohesive and protocol-driven rapid response,” said Dr Anil BG, Medical Director at Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road.
